When I was home for the summer I had the chance to visit with my middle school English teacher. She was always one of my favorite teachers and it was great to get to sit and talk to her as a fellow teacher. She had some frightening stories about children and their names.

She told me about a girl whose name is spelled M-E-R-I-C-A. Okay...so, 'Merica? As in "America"? Nope, according to her mother, that atrocity is pronounced "Marissa".

Help me.

Since this blog is brand new, we really do not have much material to share with you. We will, however. One of the contributors is now a substitute teacher in what is quite possibly the flattest state in the United States. The other is a university instructor. We promise to have some very interesting stories and examples for you shortly.

Why Do We Weep?

We weep for the future because it is bleak. The school system is failing us. Our children are dumb. They're really, really dumb. They don't know the difference between proper language and internet language. They don't know the difference between "your" and "you're". They don't know who Abraham Lincoln was. They can't do math without a calculator. They expect top grades for minimal effort. In brief, we are raising a generation of lazy, spoiled little idiots with no common sense and a huge sense of entitlement. That is why we weep for the future.

Teachers get blamed for everything that goes wrong. They are blamed for low test scores. They are blamed because little Johnny can't read. Teachers are underpaid, overworked, and sick and tired of the bullshit. I'm sorry, but it's not my fault your child is a moron. I didn't raise him or her. By the time I got to Tyler and Mackenzie, it was too late.

To quote Roger Daltrey, "I hope I die before I get old." I certainly don't want these kids looking after me when I'm a senior citizen.
